Abstract stripes and lines with a mix of gradient slate blues. To some, it might look like a very simple interpretation of looking up at city buildings on a foggy day.

Color and form exploration from this week. I’m calling this one “in the fog” inspired by viewing the Kansas City skyline from the 26th floor of City Hall last Thursday.

The week has been it’s share of chugging along on work, experiencing immense frustration when writing about myself, having issues falling asleep at night, the weather being crappy enough that I can’t run errands on my bike, waiting on emails from people I need a response on, and watching an ordinance get passed that should have been passed months ago.

This next week seems like I won’t likely have to wait to get what I need to get done. The sun is shining in my windows today, I just finished a smoothie, and my cat Fi is napping on the bed resting after eating her daily wet food meal I give her. It could definitely be worse.

Here’s some things that caught my eye last week:

Digital Redlining and the Black Rural South
I learned about this series from Marketplace this week. I have been aware of the internet access limitations rural communities have, but I had no idea how relevant this issue is in predominately Black rural communities. Hell, it’s even happening even in the city that I live in.

Macintosh Instructional Cassettes
This linkedin post was a delightful look into how 40 years ago, Apple included audio cassette tapes with the Macintosh Computer that instructed users on how to use their new computer. Check out the comments to the post for a link to a soundbite of the audio.

Samia Halaby
I hate the way I found out about this painter: from learning that her artist retrospective was cancelled. That didn’t stop me from checking out her work. She is a seasoned abstract painter whose use of color and ways she paints is really inspiring. Sign the petition to reinstate her retrospective (thanks for sharing Kelly).

Bold Protest Signs
One of my favorite things to share really innovative things people make to protest. Last year I shared the different ways balloons have been used as protest tools. I really love the signs Chris Campe created for the anti-racist protests in Hamburg. It’s doing something a little different from the usual writing on cardboard.

Let’s hear it for the Seamstresses and Tailors
The real MVPs of fashion shows.

Lamar Brand Refresh
As a designer who has done her share of very intricate optical adjustment to letters, I feel very seen by Lamar’s brand refresh. I love doing these kind of logo and type adjustments, and appreciate that they kept the work mark close to what it once was.
